WHITE TANK REGIONAL PARK NATURE CENTER MEETING ROOM

LIGHT LUNCH AND DRINKS PROVIDED

REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED (See below)

Most of this park is made up of the rugged and beautiful White Tank Mountains on the Valley’s west side.  Over time torrential rains and water flows have scoured out a series of depressions or “tanks,” in the white granite rock thus giving the mountains their name. The park features many petroglyphs and has lots of wildlife and varieties of cactus plus hiking and picnicking spots. The Nature Center shares the building with the White Tank Regional Library and has a beautiful nature path west of the building, no park entrance fee required—it has stunning views of the Arizona desert.

Address: 20304 West White Tank Mt Rd, Waddell, AZ and is located at the west end of West Olive Ave that dead ends at the park. The address of Waddell, AZ is a misnomer—don’t try to find the town of Waddell as it is unincorporated. More details and directions with map will be included in your May VOTER newsletter.

NWMC APRIL BOOK CLUB

Monday, April 15, 2024 at 3pm on Zoom

April 2024 Book Club

Submitted by Bonnie Saunders

After a lively discussion at our March Book Club meeting, we couldn't decide what book to read for April.  So I decided to check out the two most popular books that we discussed and asked those who were present at the end of the meeting to decide between the two.  The majority voted to read The Soul of Civility by Alexandra Hudson, published in 2023 so maybe it is available in local libraries.

We will meet to discuss this book at 3:00 p.m. on Zoom on Monday, April 15th.  Read the book and come to this meeting to discuss it.  If you can't read it, come to hear about it -- you might want to read it later.

The Soul of Civility by Alexandra Hudson.  As she grew up, Hudson discovered a difference between politeness—a superficial appearance of good manners—and true civility. In this timely book, Hudson sheds light on how civility can help bridge our political divide. From classical philosophers like Epictetus, to great twentieth-century thinkers like Martin Luther King Jr., to her own experience working in the federal government during one of the most politically fraught eras in our nation's history, Hudson examines how civility—a respect for the personhood and dignity of others—transcends political disagreements. Respecting someone means valuing them enough to tell them when you think they are wrong.

It’s easy to look at the divided state of the world and blame our leaders, the media, or our education system. Instead, we should focus on what we can control: ourselves. The Soul of Civility empowers readers to live tolerantly with others despite deep differences, and to rigorously protest wrongs and debate issues rather than silencing disagreements. A robust public discourse is essential to a truly civil society, and respecting others means telling hard truths. If enough of us decide to change ourselves, we might be able to change the world we live in, too.

ARIZONA FOR ABORTION ACCESS CAMPAIGN

The Arizona for Abortion Access campaign has surpassed 500k signatures! This is a significant step toward the goal of having >700k signatures. Word is that opponents of this amendment plan to spend $3M to dispute signatures, so we need a large buffer with a minimum of 700,000 signatures overall.  750,000 or even 800,000+ would be even better. So, keep collecting signatures until the petitions are turned in on July 3.

The website arizonaforabortionaccess.org is getting updated, and the refreshed site will be up by the beginning of next week. It will have a link at the top for "sign the petition" and sign ups for events.  If anyone needs notary training, email elaine@arizonalist.org and training will be scheduled as needed. They emphasize petition quality control with the training. Notaries are the last eyes on petitions before they are finalized.

The League of Women Voters has turned in over 600 signatures in each of the last two months! NWMC turned in 200 in March.  Let's keep this positive trend going! Now that the LWV texting campaign has been completed, the next step is canvassing the addresses that were texted but have not yet signed. NWMC still needs more volunteers for this effort.  If you are interested in participating, please complete this google form.  We can pick our own day to canvas as a group, you will not be canvassing alone.  LWVMP member Rivko Knox has also offered her services as a notary.  Please contact her (bvaandrk@gmail.com OR 602-430-5287) to set up an appointment if you need a notary.   Once they are notarized, please contact Tina Mollica (623-326-1952) or Lois Hanson (623-225-9738) to turn them in.
How can you get involved in collecting signatures?

Finally, if you have not seen it, watch The Janes documentary, which can be streamed on HBO Max.
