With the election only 9 months away, we need to be involved as a League and as individuals. Our next membership meeting on Saturday, February 17, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. will be hosted by the Voter Service committee with a goal of sharing the many ways to get involved.
We will have two speakers from the Maricopa County Recorder’s Office who will be sharing information about the many volunteer and paid jobs that will need to be filled during the election process. Josh Heywood is the Executive Assistant to the Maricopa County Recorder, Steven Richer and Rey Valenzuela is the Executive Director of Mail-in Voting.
NWMC FEBRUARY BOOK CLUB
Monday, February 19, 2024 at 3pm on Zoom
Submitted by Bonnie Saunders
We had a lively discussion about the two books that we read for January. February’s choice is to read Democracy Awakening: Notes on the State of America by Heather Cox Richardson. This book is written by historian and author of the popular daily newsletter LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN, a vital narrative that explains how America, once a beacon of democracy, now teeters on the brink of autocracy—and how we can turn back. I read her daily columns and I assume a lot of you do also. I have read this book and found it to be excellent. We will meet on Zoom at 3:00 p.m. (AZ time) on Monday, February 19th.
GREAT DEClSIONS CLASS: US Foreign Policy Discussion Series
Mondays in February and March beginning Monday, Feb. 5, 2024 by Zoom at 7pm (AZ time).
Bonnie Saunders will conduct a Great Decisions 2024 U.S. Foreign Policy Discussion Series on Zoom at 7:00 p.m. (AZ time) on every Monday in February and March, sponsored by the UU Church. Topics: Mideast Realignment, Climate Technology & Competition, Science Across Borders, U.S.-China Trade Rivalry, NATO's future, Understanding Indonesia, High Seas Treaty, and Pandemic Preparation. Books are available for $27 from Susie Bowman. E-mail her (susiebo74@gmail.com) if you want a book. Email Bonnie bonniesaun@aol.com if you wish to participate in the discussions so she can send you the link.

HAVE YOU CHECKED YOUR VOTER REGISTRATION STATUS?
Maricopa County Recorders Office
Regularly checking your voter registration status is a good practice to ensure you're ready to vote in the next election. Even if you're a consistent voter, voter rolls are periodically updated, and inadvertent changes or errors may occur during these updates. Regular checks allow you to catch any discrepancies and fix them quickly, ensuring that you can vote without any issues. Take a moment today to check your status at www.beballotready.vote.
HELP YOUR PREFERRED CANDIDATES WIN
Do you want to help your chosen candidates win? First, they must get on the ballot and you can help. Support your favorite partisan and non-partisan candidates by signing their petition on the AZ Secretary of State E-Qual Online Petitions website.
Registered voters will need to sign in with either their driver's license number or their Voter Registration ID number. From there, you will be able to sign petitions for up to the maximum number of candidates listed for a particular office. If your chosen candidate is running as a Clean Elections Candidate, you may donate $5 online. NOTE: Not all candidates for office will be listed on the E-Qual Online Petitions page

ARIZONA FOR ABORTION ACCESS CAMPAIGN
The Arizona for Abortion Access is a proposed ballot initiative that would amend the Arizona Constitution to add a right to abortion access in AZ. The required signature count is 383,923 to be on the ballot in November 2024. As of January 2024, they had collected 250,000 signatures. The LWVAZ has committed to obtaining a minimum of 10,000 signatures. The deadline for submitting signatures to the Arizona Secretary of State is July 3, 2024. For the League to get credit for the signatures, we urge our members to seek out a League location and sign our petitions. If enough signatures are collected, it will be on the ballot in November 2024.
NWMC Members Tina Mollica or Lois Hansen have volunteered to host as a HUB and a DEPOT. Please contact one of them to sign the petition or get copies to collect signatures on your own. If you would like to host a signature gathering event, Tina can help you put it on the Mobilize calendar. Here are instructions for gathering signatures:
