NWMC BOOK CLUB
Submitted by Bonnie Saunders
Monday, Oct. 16 by Zoom at 3pm
On Sept. 25, several of us had a lively and productive discussion on the book, Lady Justice by Dalia Lithwick. For our club meeting on Monday, October 16, 2023 on Zoom at 3:00 p.m. we decided to read a novel that is intriguing and at least somewhat upbeat-- Rogue Justice by Stacey Abrams, which is most likely available from the local library. I have read it and it is another riveting and intricately plotted thriller, in which a blackmailed federal judge, a secret court, and a brazen murder may lead to an unprecedented national crisis. I'm hoping that many of you will read this novel and come to the meeting to discuss it.

UPCOMING BALLOT INITIATIVE
Arizona for Abortion Access, the campaign to protect abortion rights on the ballot in the 2024 election, has kicked off! Now that the campaign is official, the most important thing is to collect signatures from voters so the abortion rights amendment can appear on the 2024 ballot. The coalition has a big goal – 500,000 signatures by July 3, 2024. All volunteer signature gatherers are required to sign up.
The League of Women Voters of AZ is supporting this ballot initiative. Petitions were brought to the NWMC Social on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2023 by league member, Becky Sayler, and several of us signed it at that time. Becky suggested we all keep a record of the petitions we sign so we do not duplicate our signature. Watch for more information in this newsletter and our email blasts.

GET INVOLVED WITH LOCAL SCHOOL BOARDS
Local school governing boards are the public bodies responsible for prescribing policies and approving financial decisions for its school district. School district governing board members are elected officials and typically consist of 3-5 members.
In 2024, many school districts will have 3 positions open for election. Save Our School Arizona is recruiting, training, and electing pro-public education school board candidates across Arizona! Let’s ensure school boards are filled with competent members who are committed to making schools safe and inclusive.
Have you thought about running for school board? These trainings are for you. We'll review what it means to run, the role of a school board member, and best practices for starting your journey. There’s no pressure — just a safe space to ask questions and seek information.
Attend a school board meeting in OCTOBER
Another way to support your local public school is to attend a board meeting. This is the best way to understand what is happening in your district and there is usually a time for public comment where you can express your concerns and priorities.
