REGISTER HERE FOR 10/11/23

September 13 and 20, October 11, 2023 (3:00-4:30 p.m.) by Zoom

This class is taught by Bonnie Saunders, PhD and is free and open to all members and their invited friends.  Registration will be required.  Mark your calendar now and see THE VOTER and mid-month eblasts for more information.  Read as many of these books on the Supreme Court as you are willing and able to read.

  1. Supermajority: How the Supreme Court Divided America by Michael Waldman
  2. The Shadow Docket: How the Supreme Court Uses Stealth Rulings to Amass Power and Undermine the Republic by Stephen Vladek
  3. The Chief: The Life and Turbulent Times of Chief Justice John Roberts by Joan Biskupic
  4. Nine Black Robes: Inside the Supreme Court's Drive to the Right and Its Historical Consequences by Joan Biskupic

In addition here is a link to an excellent opinion piece by Ruth Marcus of the Washington Post entitled THE TRAGEDY OF JOHN ROBERTS

Article III of the U.S. Constitution creates only the Supreme Court and allows Congress to create other federal courts, which Congress has done.  In this course, we will discuss the U.S. Justice System as a whole but we will focus on the Supreme Court and its controversial history to this day.  The Court issued some controversial rulings in June as they do every year and we will certainly discuss them as well as earlier cases to include Dobbs v Jackson Women's Health Organization in which the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade.  Just in--the ruling on Moore vs Harper, in which the Supreme Court ruled against the Independent State Legislature Theory that would have given unfettered power to run federal elections!

NWMC SEPTEMBER BOOK CLUB

Monday, September 25 @ 3pm

Submitted by Bonnie Saunders

We will not meet again until 3:00 p.m. on Zoom on Monday, September 25, 2023 -- that is the 4th Monday because on Sept 18th (the 3rd Monday), we will have a field trip as our Kick-Off for the fall.   The chosen book for September is LADY JUSTICE: Women, the Law, and the Battle to Save America by Dahlia Lithwick.  Try to read this excellent book and/or one of the other relatively new books on the Supreme Court.  Suggested: NINE BLACK ROBES by Joan Biskupic.

BIPARTISAN GROUP CALLS FOR ARIZONA TO MAKE CHANGES TO VOTING PROCESS

Based on an article from ARIZONA REPUBLIC,by Mary Jo Pitzl, 7-28-23

Summary by Judy Moor, NWMC Communications Director

The Bipartisan Elections Task Force created by Governor Katie Hobbs whose 18 members were appointed by her has begun to meet both as a group and in smaller work groups.  Governor Hobbs is the chair.  The task force aims to take a look at Arizona election procedures and come up with proposals for expanding voting rights, tightening election security, changes to exciting practices and more.  The meeting on 7-27-23 garnered several ideas and proposals that if ultimately adopted by the group could result in suggested legislation in 2024.

Initial proposals range from early voting issues to election security to voter registration to recruiting poll workers to standards for drop boxes.  Helen Purcell, former Maricopa County Recorder, is the vice chair of the group.  A full meeting is scheduled for October.  In the meantime the subgroups are working on a variety of proposals.  Read the Governor's Executive Order establishing the task force.
