Article III of the U.S. Constitution creates only the Supreme Court and allows Congress to create other federal courts, which Congress has done. In this course, we will discuss the U.S. Justice System as a whole but we will focus on the Supreme Court and its controversial history to this day. The Court issued some controversial rulings in June as they do every year and we will certainly discuss them as well as earlier cases to include Dobbs v Jackson Women's Health Organization in which the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade. Just in--the ruling on Moore vs Harper, in which the Supreme Court ruled against the Independent State Legislature Theory that would have given unfettered power to run federal elections!
Can you say “independent state legislature theory,” and know what it is? Then you have joined other NWMC members who have been watching to see what the Supreme Court would rule in the case entitled Moore v Harper. On June 27, 2023 the Court issued its opinion in a vote of 6-3 that state legislatures cannot take actions that are against the law or the state constitution that governs their actions in their state. Here is the link to read more from THE CONVERSATION: Supreme Court says state lawmakers can’t just ignore state law when drawing voting districts or choosing presidential electors.
NWMC SEPTEMBER BOOK CLUB
Monday, September 25 @ 3pm
Submitted by Bonnie Saunders
June 19, 2023, we had a good discussion about James Baker. We will not meet again until 3:00 p.m. on Zoom on Monday, September 25, 2023 -- that is the 4th Monday because on Sept 18th (the 3rd Monday), we will have a field trip as our Kick-Off for the fall. The chosen book for September is LADY JUSTICE: Women, the Law, and the Battle to Save America by Dahlia Lithwick. Try to read this excellent book and/or one of the other relatively new books on the Supreme Court. In addition here is a link to an excellent opinion piece by Ruth Marcus of the Washington Post entitled THE TRAGEDY OF JOHN ROBERTS.
