  1. Supermajority: How the Supreme Court Divided America by Michael Waldman
  2. The Shadow Docket: How the Supreme Court Uses Stealth Rulings to Amass Power and Undermine the Republic by Stephen Vladek
  3. The Chief: The Life and Turbulent Times of Chief Justice John Roberts by Joan Biskupic
  4. Nine Black Robes: Inside the Supreme Court's Drive to the Right and Its Historical Consequences by Joan Biskupic

In addition here is a link to an excellent opinion piece by Ruth Marcus of the Washington Post entitled THE TRAGEDY OF JOHN ROBERTS
Article III of the U.S. Constitution creates only the Supreme Court and allows Congress to create other federal courts, which Congress has done.  In this course, we will discuss the U.S. Justice System as a whole but we will focus on the Supreme Court and its controversial history to this day.  The Court issued some controversial rulings in June as they do every year and we will certainly discuss them as well as earlier cases to include Dobbs v Jackson Women's Health Organization in which the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade.  Just in--the ruling on Moore vs Harper, in which the Supreme Court ruled against the Independent State Legislature Theory that would have given unfettered power to run federal elections!
Can you say “independent state legislature theory,” and know what it is?  Then you have joined other NWMC members who have been watching to see what the Supreme Court would rule in the case entitled Moore v Harper. On June 27, 2023 the Court issued its opinion in a vote of 6-3 that state legislatures cannot take actions that are against the law or the state constitution that governs their actions in their state. Here is the link to read more from THE CONVERSATIONSupreme Court says state lawmakers can’t just ignore state law when drawing voting districts or choosing presidential electors.

NWMC SEPTEMBER BOOK CLUB

Monday, September 25 @ 3pm

Submitted by Bonnie Saunders

June 19, 2023, we had a good discussion about James Baker. We will not meet again until 3:00 p.m. on Zoom on Monday, September 25, 2023 -- that is the 4th Monday because on Sept 18th (the 3rd Monday), we will have a field trip as our Kick-Off for the fall.   The chosen book for September is LADY JUSTICE: Women, the Law, and the Battle to Save America by Dahlia Lithwick.  Try to read this excellent book and/or one of the other relatively new books on the Supreme Court.  In addition here is a link to an excellent opinion piece by Ruth Marcus of the Washington Post entitled THE TRAGEDY OF JOHN ROBERTS.

NWMC HOSTS SOCIAL EVENT FEATURING BUNCO

Click here for Bunco PhotosSubmitted by Cathy Noga

Fifteen League members attended this social event on Saturday, June 24, 2023. It was especially nice to welcome two of our newest members-- Alison Burton and Susan Muha as well as long-time member recently renewed, Juanita Howard. The afternoon began with an ice breaker, Who Am I.  It was a brain tease to uncover the name of the strong woman pasted on the backs of each member, who was allowed to ask questions of others for clues in an effort to guess the name!
After several rounds of a lively game of Bunco, three winners emerged:
Linda Napier won most wins; Betty Mulcahy won most Buncos; Leslie Eaton won most Baby Buncos.  Everyone enjoyed the treats provided by Betty, our Hospitality Chair.  A good time was had by all! Click the photo for more pictures.
