Thanks to everyone who joined us for the initial Youth Voter Project meeting on June 24.

So many of our members have shown a great interest in our new project to get out the Gen Z vote. When we met for our Zoom meeting on May 24th, the screen was full of smiling faces, many of them some of our newer members, eager to get to work.  The heart of the meeting centered around our two guests, Gail Digate and Bridget Fitzgerald.  Gail came to us from Northern Arizona LWV to share her experiences and offer recommendations for success as she has been working on this project since 2018.  Bridget offered us a Gen Z perspective as she is currently a senior at ASU and has had experience working on the 2022 election with the Metro Phoenix League.

Not everyone who expressed interest was able to join us that evening, but we will be meeting in person on Wednesday, June 7th, at 1:30 pm. This will be a working meeting where we can discuss the direction and initial parameters of our project.  There are many tasks to be completed so there will be something for everyone.

Linda Napier has offered her beautiful home once again. Light refreshments will be provided so come and join us for a great afternoon of enjoyable work!  Please be sure to register!

May 2023 Book

ZOOM LINK ON NWMC Website Event Calendar NOTE THE NEW TIME!

Submitted by Bonnie Saunders

We had a VERY lively discussion on the first three parts of the book about James Baker III, The Man Who Ran Washington by Peter Baker and Susan Glasser -- focused on Baker's roles during the Reagan Administration.  We came up with more than a dozen really appropriate adjectives to describe him and his character!   We will discuss the rest of the book at 3:00 p.m. (time change) on zoom on Monday, June 19th -- mostly on his role as George H.W. Bush's Secretary of State at the end of the Cold War.  The book is quite long (more than 500 pages), so read what you can and come to discuss Baker's role in the end of the Cold War.  If you want to hear the adjectives, you'll need to come to the June meeting!!  If you want to come only to listen, that's fine also!

September Book Club Meeting, 9-18 @3pm on Zoom
The next meeting after June will be on Monday, September 18th at 3:00 p.m. on zoom.  We will discuss Lady Justice: Women, the Law, and the Battle to Save America by Dahlia Lithwick.  More on that later but just a heads up on the book and the date of the first fall discussion.  Read lots of books this summer and come in September with some good books that you think we should read and discuss.

Contact Susie Bowman if you need a link for this Zoom meeting @susiebo74@gmail.com.

VIVIAN WOOD, LOCAL LWV/NWMC MEMBER AND RENAISSANCE WOMAN, TURNED 100 IN SEPTEMBER 2022 AND DIED IN DECEMBER

Vivian Wood

Vivian Wood was born in Kenton Ohio on September 29, 1922. She celebrated her 100th birthday at Royal Oaks in Sun City. Vivian has always been active, inquisitive, and involved. During high school, she edited the school newspaper and after graduation, became a reporter for the local newspaper. She authored articles about the war and local boys who were enlisting. She became excited to see the world and before her 20th birthday, asked her father to sign permission to enlist as she was underage. He had early recognized her potential and agreed.

She considered joining the WACS, but the Marine recruiter told her she would like the Marine uniforms better because the green uniforms would complement her red hair. She completed basic training at Camp Lejeune, then went by troop train to Camp Elliott near San Diego, California. Her assignment there was as mail orderly, managing mail call. Mail was especially important to the troops, and she felt bad for those who did not get mail.

Camp Pendleton opened in 1942 when the Marines took over a big California ranch and Vivian was sent there from Camp Elliott in a Women’s Battalion as a classification officer assigning women to jobs. Every morning, she would take calls about needs for the day to send women to various duties including truck drivers. Her typing skills continued to be of use as she also wrote the Daily News Sheet which reported daily assignments, who was out sick or on leave.
Vivian was promoted to Sergeant and continued at Camp Pendleton until the war ended in 1945. She was discharged in December. The military experience contributed greatly to her later success in life.  Following discharge from the Marines, Vivian and three friends drove a car from California to Washington DC, then she took a train home to Ohio. Four women driving alone were a rare sight in those days. They had great adventures on the trip.

An accomplished typist, she took additional secretarial courses and worked in Philadelphia at the Farm Journal attending Temple University at night. Using the GI bill and later other scholarships, she applied for entrance to the University of Chicago, where she got a BA and a master’s degree in Sociology and a Ph.D. in Human Development.  At that time, the field of Human Development was in its infancy, encompassing three disciplines: Sociology, Physiology and Psychology. The National Institute of Health provided stipends for those studying aging. Vivian’s work included extensive research as well as teaching and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students. She worked at University of Wisconsin for 27 years teaching about aging.

Vivian retired from teaching in 1987 but continued her research in aging, specifically studying and authoring papers about the new trends in retirement communities. She was active and held offices in the Gerontological Society which often selected her as a speaker to present her papers at the annual Gerontological Society conferences. Her work ultimately consisted of encouraging more and more people to study aging. She formed a group who were visiting and writing about the retirement communities. At that time, the concept of retirement communities was not generally well understood or accepted. Many felt seniors would be better off in their home areas. Vivian, along with several other faculty members and doctoral students who were under her wing visited the Sun City West development. As guests, they saw firsthand how positively residents responded to the activities around them. Vivian decided to buy a home there and eventually relocated to Royal Oaks.

During the time Vivian lived in Sun City West, she was active in many local groups including The American Association of University Women, The League of Women Voters, and National Organization for Women. She was part of the group which started the AAUW hiking club. She helped to start the monthly newspaper column called Women’s Watch, which is still being published monthly more than 25 years later in the Independent.

Even over 100 years old, Vivian was still well informed about current events and an interesting conversationalist. Vivian was indeed a Renaissance Woman, outstandingly versatile, well rounded, with a broad range of intellectual interests and accomplishments, having made major contributions to the field of research about aging.
