NWMC ANNUAL MEETING HELD APRIL 29, 2023

Delicious Taco lunchSpeaker, Sherry Aguilar, gave a most interesting and engaging presentation.  She was presented with a personalized vase and flowers and joined us for lunch.  The business meeting, presided over by Acting President, Judy Moor, included reminders of our nonpartisan and DEI policies.  Judy introduced the current board and thanked them for their service to NWMC. She then gave a brief summary of the end of year report that was contained in the special mailing to all members.
Motions were made, seconded and approved unanimously for the recommended revised bylaws, proposed budget, and proposed program.  A motion was made and passed to accept the election of co-presidents and treasurer and two elected board members.
We enjoyed video messages from our new co-presidents who were unable to attend in person—Karen Devine and Bonnie Saunders and welcomed our new Treasurer, Leslie Eaton. The two new elected Board members were Bonnie Jackson and Cathy Noga.
The YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE award was presented to Tina Mollica by Susan Penner, Chair with appreciation and flowers.  We enjoyed festive table decorations and lunch overseen by Hospitality Chair, Betty Mulcahy.  Secretary Kathy Long will create a summary for our records.  Linda Napier reported that the meeting was successful and that the technology worked!

NWMC BOOK CLUB

May 2023 Book

Submitted by Bonnie Saunders

We had a VERY lively discussion on the first three parts of the book about James Baker III, The Man Who Ran Washington by Peter Baker and Susan Glasser -- focused on Baker's roles during the Reagan Administration.  We came up with more than a dozen really appropriate adjectives to describe him and his character!  We focused mostly on his role as George H.W. Bush's Secretary of State at the end of the Cold War.  The book is quite long (more than 500 pages), so read what you can and come to discuss Baker's role in the end of the Cold War.  If you want to hear the adjectives, you'll need to come to the June meeting!!  If you want to come only to listen, that's fine also!

The next meeting we will discuss the rest of the book.  NOTE NEW TIME OF OUR NEXT BOOK CLUB ON JUNE 19, 2023 OF 3PM.

The next meeting after June will be on Monday, September 18th at 3:00 p.m. on zoom.  We will discuss Lady Justice: Women, the Law, and the Battle to Save America by Dahlia Lithwick.  More on that later but just a heads up on the book and the date of the first fall discussion.

Read lots of books this summer and come in September with some good books that you think we should read and discuss.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

NWMC NEEDS YOU TO SERVE AS A NWMC REPRESENTATIVE ON THE STATE BOARD

We need a member to volunteer to serve on the LWVAZ Board of Directors for the next two years (2023-2025) to represent our league. This is a voting position and requires attendance at LWVAZ monthly board meetings.  Currently all meetings are held by Zoom.  There is an expectation that the person in this position will serve on a state standing or ad hoc committee.  This is a wonderful opportunity to increase your knowledge about the state League and how it operates for the benefit of all the local leagues. Please contact Bonnie Saunders or Karen Devine if you are interested.
