Voter Service is embarking on a very exciting new project to encourage the Gen Z (18-29) vote that has been increasing since 2018.  Young people have many issues they care deeply about, and they want to see change!

Gail Digate will join us.  She has led a very successful program for her League in Northern Arizona, and she will share her experience and suggestions for what she has found to work best.  This is a vital project with a variety of responsibilities needed to get it implemented.

Bonnie Jackson, Chair

JOIN US AND BRING YOUR ENTHUSIASM FOR GETTING INVOLVED TO MAKE THIS PROJECT A SUCCESS!

May 2023 Book

Submitted by Bonnie Saunders

After an extremely interesting discussion on After the Ivory Tower Falls and a couple of zoom problems, those present at the book club meeting yesterday decided we would read The Man Who Ran Washington: The Life and times of James A. Baker III by Peter Baker and Susan Glasser, published in 2021.  It is available from Amazon in paperback.  I have read books by these two authors and they write well and interestingly.  Read this book and come to the zoom discussion at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, May 15th (3rd Monday).  You will get a reminder and a link before the meeting.

R.I.S.E. COURSES

Note to our members:  To participate in these classes, you must be a member of R.I.S.E. (RISE Lifelong Learning Center)
R.I.S.E. Course: "The Supreme Court and Other Federal Courts".  Four Wednesday afternoons in June.

Article III of the U.S. Constitution creates only the Supreme Court and allows Congress to create other federal courts, which Congress has done.  In this course, we will focus on the Supreme Court and its controversial history to this day.  The Court might issue some controversial rulings during this class as they do every June.  If so, we will certainly discuss them!

R.I.S.E. Course: "The Russian Invasion of Ukraine, One Year+ Later". Four Monday afternoons in June.

What has been the impact, so far, of the Russian invasion of Ukraine -- on both of those countries, on NATO, on energy supplies?  What has been the role of the U.S. in aid to Ukraine?  How has the rest of the world reacted to these events?  We will discuss these questions and the historical background of the invasion.

NWMC NEEDS YOU TO SERVE AS A NWMC REPRESENTATIVE ON THE STATE BOARD

We need a member to volunteer to serve on the LWVAZ Board of Directors for the next two years (2023-2025) to represent our league. This is a voting position and requires attendance at LWVAZ monthly board meetings.  Currently all meetings are held by Zoom.  There is an expectation that the person in this position will serve on a state standing or ad hoc committee.
This
is a wonderful opportunity to increase your knowledge about the state League and how it operates for the benefit of all the local leagues. Please attend our next NWMC Board Meeting by Zoom on May 3, 2023 at 6pm to volunteer or to learn more about this position.  Contact Secretary, Kathy Long at 203-252-8044 for the link to the Board meeting.

SENATE VOTES ON EQUAL RIGHTS AMENDMENT

The latest vote comes 100 years after it was first introduced in Congress.  Read full article here

Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer said Monday the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and efforts to limit access to the abortion pill mifepristone, as well as state-level actions to roll back women’s rights, have made the ERA and its protections more critical than ever.  “In this ominous hour of American history, the Equal Rights Amendment has never been as necessary and urgent as it is today,” said Schumer (D-N.Y.)  The proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution would guarantee equal rights under the law regardless of sex — meaning the Constitution would clearly state that women have equal rights as men.

UPDATE: With a 51-47 vote, Senate Democrats and supporters were nine votes shy of the 60 needed for a resolution to clear the 100-member chamber's filibuster hurdle.
