LWVNWMC ANNUAL BOOK DRIVE
The NWMC Annual Book Drive was started by member Doris Flax in the late 1990s with books donated to the Dysart School District. 2023 & 2024, we donated books to the Dysart Community Center. The mission of DCC is to provide educational and developmental opportunities for low-income children and adults in our local communities. Educating those in need was the first priority for these volunteers and remains so today. From its founding more than fifty years ago, Dysart Community Center has expanded its services to provide a variety of educational programs for thousands of West Valley residents in our local communities.
This year, the LWVNWMC Education Team delivered 290 books to Cartwright Elementary School in January. Cartwright ES is a Title I school that serves Prek-8th grade. Principal Andrew Tippins escorted league members to personally deliver the books to sixteen K-8 grade classrooms. Teachers were very grateful and students were eager to read the books. One teacher said that she frequently visits Goodwills to find copies of "Wonder" for her classroom. One teacher chose her favorite childhood book, the Berenstein Bears "Inside, Outside, Upside Down". A resource teacher immediately sat down to work through the Montessori activity book with one of her students. Thank you to each and every member who made these "book wishes" come true for these Title I students and teachers.
